About A Childhood in Nature

Beyond nourishment, shelter, and love, there is a responsibility adults have to provide an entryway to nature in all of it's many forms as often as possible to the children in their lives.

A Childhood in Nature was created with the intention of offering a space dedicated to igniting minds and hearts with a love and appreciation for nature. It is here to inspire you and your little ones to get outside and make the most of what this planet offers us so freely.

Nature is diverse; there are deserts, mountains, woods, beaches, arctic landscapes, green valleys and dry tundras. This is why A Childhood in Nature explores all the many forms of nature through the wonderful contributions of people around the world. Bloggers, IGers, explorers and parents, and most of all, children.

Sometimes children (and adults!) are hesitant or resistant about going outdoors. A Childhood in Nature has ideas to get everyone excited about getting outside. Adventure awaits; and a plethora of free 'supplies' like stones, feathers, and acorns to bring home and get creative with.

You don't need to live in the countryside to enjoy nature. City dwellers, or people living in small towns like myself, can always find a way to have nature be a part of their lives. Whether it be a park, a community garden, bird watching, or frequent trips to a near-by farm; there is always a way to incorporate the world of plants and animals into your family routine.

The fact that you are here means that you have a desire to know nature, and to experience the generosity and beauty of nature with the children in your life. Welcome! I hope you find many reasons here to get outdoors today!

About A Childhood in Nature's author, Dawn:

Hello! My name is Dawn, and I'm an American living in a small town in Austria with my son Rafael, husband Ramon, and two dogs Kiki and Boston.

I like taking photographs, walks in the woods, getting to know my son, drawing, writing, the changing seasons, and learning new things about our planet.

I had my son Rafael in 2011, and since we have two dogs, he was out in the woods with me nearly every day; first bundled up against my chest in a carrier, then being pushed down dirt paths in a stroller, and finally, walking beside me.

My love for the outdoors and my interest in nature have been strengthened through the experience of spending time with my child in the woods. As much as I can teach him about bugs, birds, and berries, there is something he teaches me, without even trying, which is not included in nature guide books or encyclopedias.

Thank you for joining me here. I really hope you get inspired and excited about going outside!

  1. I have enjoyed your other blog and plan to start following this one as well. My first grandchild is expected this summer and will be living with me (as does my daughter) for the first few years at least. I live in suburbia, but look forward to introducing her to nature, even if it is just by walking my neighborhood and noticing what is on the ground. I look forward to this new blog and hope to take inspiration from it in introducing my grandchild to nature. I have always enjoyed your photos and am in awe of the beauty where you live.
